We will be at the PFF Aspen Summit. It starts this Sunday, and here's the agenda. Suffice it to say, that it's a an excellent forum to spend quality time with some of the key policy players from the tech, telecom, cable and entertainment worlds.
Besides doing our actual job, we'll also try to talk to folks on issue related that we cover frequently on this blog and include their perspectives here. We won't blog on every panel but, if there are requests to cover any, let us know. Here's what looks especially interesting...
Of course, there will be a Net Neutrality skirmish....
Panel Discussion: Net Neutrality, Investment & Innovation
* The Honorable Michael Gallagher, Adjunct Fellow, The Progress & Freedom Foundation and Partner, Perkins Coie, LLP, (Moderator)
* Carolyn Brandon, Vice President, Policy, CTIA - The Wireless Association
* James W. Cicconi, Senior Executive Vice President-External and Legislative Affairs, AT&T
* Tod Cohen, Deputy General Counsel and Vice President, Government Relations, eBay
* David Drummond, General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Corporate Development, Google, Inc.
* Lawson Hunter, Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Officer, Bell Canada and Bell Canada Enterprises, Inc.
Cohen and Drummond are far from shrinking violets and we haven't had a chance to hear either one in a public forum discuss Net Neutrality yet. Should make things interesting and we wonder how much we will be talking about the next Congress versus the waning days of the current one.
PFF's fellows, btw, are strongly opposed to NN legislated mandates. Speaking of which, this panel will be preceded by a keynote from Verizon EVP and lobbyist Tom Tauke (a former congressman).
And, then there is this panel which will cover what we think will be incredibly important to determining how soon and how much new forms of communications get regulated...
Panel Discussion: Child Protection and Free Expression in a World of Abundant, Converging Media
* Adam Thierer, Director of the Center for Digital Media Freedom and Senior Fellow, The Progress & Freedom Foundation (Moderator)
* Michael Altschul, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, CTIA - The Wireless Association
* Rich Lappenbusch, Director, Media Standards Business Strategy and Media Interoperability, Microsoft Corporation
* Doug Lowenstein, President, Entertainment Software Association
* Jennifer M. Mardosz, Corporate Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer, Qwest Communications International Inc.
* Hemanshu Nigam, Senior Vice President, Fox Interactive Media and Chief Security Officer, MySpace.com
* Joe Waz, Vice President, External Affairs and Public Policy Counsel, Comcast Communications
Very good to see that MySpace's new security lead will be there. Hopefully, we'll be able to add to our thread with new, substantive thoughts on the topic.
And, please, if you read this blog and you'll be in Aspen, please introduce yourself and let's have a drink at the Sky Bar.
