Gates, Brin & Deere

Silicon Valley is great.  Lots of smart people clustered around.  Endless pools of entrepreneurs.  Fantastic research centers.  Yada yada ya.

And, while many regions may try and fail to replicate SV, it's a great untold story how pervasive the products and intelligence of the Valley are now ingrained in critical industries and businesses across the United States. 

Perhaps this is just a missed PR opportunity for tech land.  But, we think it's a bigger deal.  It's a missed opportunity for "tech" to show policymakers that when they are considering tech policy laws and regulations -- they're just not supporting or ignoring the provinces of Palo Alto, Mountain View, San Francisco, Redmond, Boston and Austin -- they are impacting businesses, period.

Where did this mini-rant come from?  Check out the "In The Lead" column by Carol Hymowitz in today's WSJ (sub required).  The column mostly focuses on the quintessentially old-school big business John Deere.  It seems that the old tractor maker is now fashioning itself as an innovation company first and foremost...(after the jump)...

Step inside the technology center at John Deere here and you'll feel more like you're in Silicon Valley than in the Rust Belt.

Engineers project three-dimensional images of new equipment designs on the walls and walk inside the virtual models to assess aerodynamics, durability and other things they couldn't see on a regular blueprint. Others work to perfect robot-driven vehicles, or R-Gators, which now are being used by the military and may find a peacetime use mowing sports fields.... The company's ability to keep inventing new products that are useful to customers is still the key to Deere's growth...

Consider how innovation trickles down to help the average farmer...

Customers who buy Deere's farm, forestry, construction and commercial landscaping products feel pressed to work smarter and faster, he notes. Government farm subsidies are shrinking, fuel costs are rising and competition is fiercer than ever. So whatever devices and services Deere develops, they must help the average operator become more productive and proficient.

Deere's newest tractors and other equipment are "computerized factories on wheels," Mr. Lane says. They feature guided steering systems called AutoTrac, which stay on track to within the width of a human thumbprint. The result: The equipment eliminates missed or overlapped rows during crop seeding, spraying and cultivating. Data-capture systems also enable farmers to analyze fertilizer, soil composition and yields in each section of their fields....

Increasing R&D funding, greater support for math and science and general good will towards those confounding technologists who talk funny isn't just going to help build the next Laser Tag center off Highway 101.  The policies could help keep American farms in business -- to name just one (but highly symbolic) example.

Tech policy need not simply be tech industry policy.  It's a core component of basic business and economic policy.

Собирали со шкетом мебель, остались какие-то запчасти.

У нас в садике, когда на лето сборные группы формируют, была такая история.

Первый день, у воспитательницы дети из трёх групп. Есть свои, но в большинстве чужие. Вечером всех разобрали, один ребёнок остаётся. Сидит играет в песочнице. Воспитательница на веранде. Начинает волноваться.

- За тобой кто должен прийти?

Ну, папа так папа, сидят дальше.
Папы нет.
А всё, садик пустой уже, один охранник, и спросить не у кого. Пошла, взяла списки, где телефоны родителей, чтоб позвонить. Спрашивает.

Она все списки перешерстила. Нет такога ребёнка в списках, хоть ты тресни!
И что делать? Был бы понятный ребёнок, забрала б домой, и дело с концом. А тут?
А этот главное сидит, играет как ни в чем ни бывало.
Обычно, если ребёнка долго не забирают, у него истерика, а воспитатель его утешает. А тут всё наоборот. Ребёнку хоть бы что, а воспитателя уже колбасит не по детски.

- Ну и где твой папа!!!

- На работе.

- И когда он за тобой придёт?

- Он не придёт.

- ПОЧЕМУ???

- Он футбол смотрит. Он когда футбол смотрит, его лучше не трогать.

Хочу поведать как провела минувшие выходные. Живу я в маленьком городке, учусь в институте. Все началось с того, что неделю назад на прошедших выходных.
