The Internet just got big enough to have a generation gap. The rift is between those 30-years-olds and up who use the Internet for work, research, shopping and communication and those under 30 who simply live on the Internet.
This became clear to us during a recent online debate about what MySpace is and why it's important among a very savvy group of digital music folks. Most only understood it from a business perspective but had no idea why any average 17-year-old would ever want to spend time on the site. Then, as if to illustrate this point to almost a comical extreme, this week, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a once-in-every-generation editorial this week. The editorial, titled "Lost in MySpace", warns:
IT'S TOUGH enough for parents to get their teenagers to talk. From ages 11 to 17, all they seem to want is their own space.
These days, however, that "space" may very well be MySpace.com -- a "place for friends" according to the site, where teenagers spend countless hours chatting with friends, listening to music and posting photos of themselves.... Many articles have been written about the dangers of children and teenagers on the Internet, but this e-obsessiveness poses another threat. With every hit on MySpace, the average face-to-face interaction grows evermore extinct.
The Chron concludes:
Technology is inevitable, as is growing up. But nothing can replace the sound of a friend's voice, a comforting hug, or seeing a real-live smile -- no matter what generation you're from.
Somewhere, Keith Townsend just removed his reading glasses and is laughing.
Meanwhile, just as Main Stream Media is noticing it, MySpace may already be on its way toward the same fate as the hula hoop, the Pet Rock and Friendster. The Man (Rupert Murdoch, of course) is keeping MySpacers down, and they're none to happy says the Independent (UK)...
"Angry members of MySpace, the personal file-sharing website for young adults, are accusing Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation of censoring their postings and blocking their access to rival sites.... The 38 million subscribers to MySpace, which News Corp bought for $629m (£355m) last July, discovered that when they wrote to each other about rival video-swapping site YouTube, the words were automatically deleted, and attempts to download video images from YouTube led to blank screens...The protests gathered pace, and when 600 MySpace customers complained and a campaign began to boycott the site and relocate to rival sites..."
"IT'S TOUGH enough for parents to get their teenagers to talk. From ages 11 to 17, all they seem to want is their own space. " it's natural. need to be independent, or just desire to live their own lives.

I embossed the guitar player with silver powder -- much shinier in real life and that flash is powerful as you cannot see through the embossing with your naked eye.The saying is from my favorite retired birthday greeting set -- had to use that song lyric for this one!
