Davos is like going to an exclusive prep-school reunion for a school that you didn’t attend – provided that the prep school admitted future Buddhist monks, African leaders, Indian titans of industry, academics, hundreds of investment bank money men and, of course, (and incongruously) a zillion journalists....
All the above were at the opening reception last night in the
extravagantly lit Hotel Belvedere. All seemed to know each other after repeated visits to the event. And, despite their stature at home and the size of their wallets, all seemed to relish their first contact with others.
Also, despite our lack of a fancy color-coded badge that
allows all-access to WEF events, everyone was warm and engaging to this technology policy communications guy. The night's discussions ranged from lots of talk about

We didn't see many techie types in the house, but did briefly chat with Travis Kalanick of Red Swoosh. We knew Travis from the Internet Music 1.0 days when he was on the other side of the law (with Scour) and were happy to see him doing well (and attending the event as a Young Global Leader). Like nearly everyone wise from those crazy old days, he's taken what he learned, gained an infusion of modesty and applied it to developing the next wave of content delivery.
After the reception, we repaired to a local pizza joint for a much needed dinner and afterward went searching for others at one of the five different establishments in Davos named the Piano Bar. Soon after, we stood in the frigid Alp air and waited for a bus. Swiss efficiency isn't a myth. We waited for 20 minutes alone. About three minutes before the bus arrived, scores of people headed toward the bus stop and joined us for the ride home.
