California media are having a field day today with the news that a Democrat who used to work for Gray Davis will be Governor Schwarzenegger's next chief of staff. They (naturally) love the intrigue and the back-biting between the left and right on the hire. See the Capitol Weekly piece for one of the better reports.
Still, there are two truths that have been barely reported. First, the outgoing chief of staff Pat Cleary was on her way out, regardless. She had planned to leave by the first of the year long ago. Cleary is a class act and was greatly respected in both the Wilson and Schwarzenegger administrations. The other is that, while the incoming Susan Kennedy is a Democrat with a history of socially liberal ideals, she also is a tireless advocate for smart business interests that will advance innovation and California competitiveness. Proof comes in Kennedy's most recent role as PUC commissioner -- where she may have been one of the top pro-technology PUC commissioners in the entire country.
Consider...
that the pro-business Pacific Research Institute's Sonia Arrison said that "Susan Kennedy has shown great courage and leadership on ... telecom issues." The tech industry CEO group TechNet has also praised Kennedy's PUC work on keeping VOIP unregulated by the state. Moreover, consider the wise words of Cisco's government affairs lead Laura Ipsen as posted to Cisco's policy blog...
In her recent tenure as a PUC commissioner (Kennedy) has been a great advocate for market-based solutions, including letting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and broadband growth without onerous regulations. Her common-sense approach to solving problems will serve the state of California well.
Additionally (and important to Cisco), she knows the value of the technology industry to the economy in California. The Governor seems to be working to remove the D’s and the R’s next to people’s names in Sacramento and wants a C (Californian) next to all names. Susan will be a great help in building that vision.
