Doing my quick morning blog feed review, I couldn't help put notice Barack Obama's handsome face on the handsome Brightcove video player residing at several of my favorite blogs. Naturally, it's interesting that this is now the third presidential candidate in three weeks to do something interesting with online video (after Edwards' grass-rootsey Rocketboom rub and Romney's You-Tube "rapid response").
While I do think the political media are more savvy to new media ways than hipster bloggers want to think, one fairly simple thing that they and many political consultants don't get yet is just how damn easy it is to take a video and embed it somewhere else. Yes, this may be obvious to you and me, but it's not to 97% of Americans (according to the deep calculations off the top of my head).
How will this impact things? We'll see, but I can see it as a big motivator for folks to get involved and distribute political messages. Sending a link to a NYT editorial is nice, but posting an actual video has a heck of a lot more impact and you feel like you are almost part of the creative/advocascy process. All said, as we discussed during last year's campaign when we reviewed interesting political Web videos, candidates aren't going to have a free pass for long to put up canned, boring material that could have easily have run on a typical 30-second ad or in a speech to the Chamber of Commerce.
